Why is a mobile friendly, or responsive website important to have?

An astonishing 1 in 4 people in South Africa now access the internet using their mobile devices, with more people joining the local mobile internet revolution daily. Traditional websites do not scale down to fit the smaller screen size of a mobile device which makes text difficult to read, while buttons and links tend to be difficult to locate and use.

A mobile friendly website avoids all these problems and delivers a pleasant experience to the mobile user. A stand-alone mobile website (mobi site) is separate from the main website and has its own URL – for example http://m.google.com. The latest trend however is toward responsive website design, which enables the website to resize according to the device being used.

Whether you opt for a stand-alone mobile website or a mobile responsive website will depend entirely upon your needs as a business. We will help you to make the best decision for your business during our online marketing consultation with you (our consultations are free!).

When is payment required for my web site design and development services?

For small projects, 50% of the estimated fee must be provided prior to beginning work, with the remaining payment due upon completion of the project. For larger projects, an initial payment representing one-third of the estimated total fee is required. The second payment is required upon the halfway point, with the final third due upon completion of the project.

Is a custom design really that much more valuable than an attractive template?

In general, we don't recommend the use of templates, but they may be appropriate in certain situations. For example, if you absolutely must have a site launched within the space of a few days, or if you are on an especially limited budget, a template might be an acceptable short-term solution. However, these instances should be the exception rather than the rule for these reasons:

1. Most templates do not conform to important usability and search engine guidelines. If you're not meeting the needs of your users, or if the search engines can't easily index your site, then you'll simply be wasting your valuable time and money with this approach.

2. Most templates do not lend themselves to quick or easy modification. If you require design modifications, it's important to understand that they can substantially increase your total cost.

3. Templates purchased from the major online vendors may be used hundreds or even thousands of times, even by your own competitors. A cookie cutter design doesn't attract much lasting attention. Good design is a reflection of your business, your strategy and your audience.

Are any other services included in your web design and development costs?

Yes. Our web design and development service includes configuration of your email accounts, detailed monthly traffic reports and basic search engine optimization services. Basic SEO includes submission of your site to the major search engines, and the setup of your primary meta-tag information (Page Title, Description and Keywords). Additionally, your site is built from the ground up with search engine friendly technologies and methods.

How many changes can I make to my site without additional cost?

We give as much latitude as we possibly can. After you've identified the general format and color schemes of your preferred design, we'll complete up to 2 rounds of major revisions at no charge. All minor revisions are provided at no charge.

Can I see my website while it’s in progress?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. We build your website on our development server, and provide you with a temporary URL so that you can monitor the progress of your site. During this phase, we encourage your feedback if something isn't quite the way you envisioned it or if you've changed your mind. Once your site is ready and you have provided your approval, we release it live on your server and submit your original URL to the major search engines.

What kind of technology do you support?

We specialize in XHTML, CSS and Flash, but are very experienced with JavaScript, DHTML, XML, PHP, and others. Although it's unlikely, if there's something we can't do, we can reach out to our network of partners for additional services (at no additional cost to you).

What is the cost of creating a website in South Africa?

Website design prices in South Africa varies from R8000 – R200 000 for the exact same website depending on the skill and experience a designer has, and programming language/s or content management systems (CMS) they use. When you’re thinking of getting a website design done for yourself or your company, you will likely be looking for the best pricing from a quality website design company. Sure, you could pay a few bucks to a freelancer who will likely mess some things up, or you could actually invest some money into your new website and have everything go smoothly and look amazing when it’s finished. Think of it this way, would you hire a person walking past your house to fix a broken window or would you call a company that specializes in it? Right, you would call the company who has done this plenty of times instead of hiring someone off of the street.

Figuring out an exact quote is the same as asking someone how long a piece of string is. You can’t figure it out with just a simple question of “How much does it cost to design a website?” when there are many variables included in the quote. Don’t worry about asking for a quote, over 80% of jobs that come across a web designer’s desk have to go over quotes and explain how everything will work since most of the clients are doing this for the first time.

How long does it take to create a website?

The length of time it takes to create a fully functional website is based on several factors. Custom design work can take anywhere from 1 - 4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design and the number of revisions you require. The development phase requires an additional 1 - 6 weeks, depending on the number of pages, and the functionality required. Of course, these are general guidelines, and we will make every effort to meet the time-frame you have in mind.

Should I use Linux Hosting or Windows (Microsoft) Hosting for my site?

In order to decide whether to go for Linux or Microsoft hosting you will have to identify what your website will need supported.

If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP.net, ASP, MS Access, Microsoft SQL Server or VBScript, then Windows hosting would be better.

Linux is generally a more popular option because of its affordability, stability and many features. Linux supports PHP, Perl, mySQL, PostgreSQL and CGI Scripts.

Both Linux and Windows servers are reliable, stable and secure. Generally, however, more viruses are written to attack Windows servers than Linux servers. If you need to host on a Windows Server ensure that your web hosting company continually upgrades their Windows and Linux servers with the latest fixes and patches available.

How do I publish or upload my website to the internet?

The most common way of uploading files to your site's account is by using FTP. When you sign up you will be sent your FTP account and details that lets you access files in your account.

You can then use a FTP tool to transfer your website files from your hard drive to your FTP account on the web server. You can use a dedicated FTP program such as WS_FTP, CuteFTP or FileZilla. Alternately you can use the built in Windows or Internet Explorer FTP program. If you prefer a Web interface, you can use your account control panel's File Manager instead.

We suggest using dedicated FTP programs because these programs have the best user interfaces and support advanced options like setting file permissions and resuming aborted file transfers.

You can download FileZilla in the Download Section of our Support site.

What is PHP?

This is a programming language which enables your website to be more dynamic.

PHP is a HTML embedded scripting language that lets you create dynamic web pages. It is an open source, server-side, and cross-platform scripting language. PHP-enabled web pages are treated just like regular HTML pages and you can create and edit them the same way you normally create regular HTML pages.

Each programming language has its own benefits. Find out more at www.php.net

Can I use Flash, JavaScript or Java Applets on my website?

Yes. These are client side features – which mean that it runs on your visitor’s computer. So you can add flash, JavaScript or Java Applets to your website and as long as your visitors have these features available on their computers they will be able to view your web pages perfectly. Any browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) that supports them will do. So these features are all supported by default on all hosting packages.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is the process of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that your website will be online. It means that you can publish your website so that anybody in the world can visit your website on the Web.

You can either pay a web hosting company for your website hosting or you can opt for free hosting. If you go for free hosting then you will have banner ads or pop-ups on your website. If you pay you will have no adverts and will be in complete control of your website.

What is a domain name?

Domain names are easy-to-remember words that we can use to communicate to a DNS server the website we want to visit. The Domain Name System (DNS) is what translates the friendly name to an IP address.

Somewhat like international phone numbers, the domain name system gives every server a memorable and easy-to-spell address, such as borakenetserve.co.za. The domain name hides the IP address that most people aren't interested in seeing or using, like the 129.232.212.210 address used by borakenetserve.co.za.

In other words, it's much easier to type "borakenetserve.co.za" in your web browser than it is to remember and enter the IP address that the website uses. This is why domain names are so incredibly useful.
